Feature and other notices: The Ouray County Historical Society is currently accepting entries for its annual photo exhibit “San Juan Memories”. $5 per photo entry fee, ribbon winners from the past may not submit any previous prize winning photo, entries due by June 25, no more than three entries by any one artist, juried by Jack P. Arrington, Boulder, CO photographer. Opening July 8. Juried first place prize – $75, Juried 2nd place prize – $50, Juried 3rd place prize – $25. Peoples Choice Award – $25. Trail Update: Upper Cascade Falls and Portland Trail are prime for Hiking right now!

Although there may still be a few downed trees and lingering mounds of snow further up, particularly on the north and east facing slopes, the following trails are ready to hike:

Ouray Perimeter trail, Ice Park Loop, Corbett Creek/Dallas Trail, up to below the Aspens, Portland Mine, Sutton, to the large avalanche between the two creeks, Lower and Upper Cascade Falls, to the top ledge, Twin Peaks and Oak Creek, to the junction, Old Twin Peaks, Silvershield, Baldy, to the summit, Storm’s Gulch, Alpine Mine Overlook, to the junction until you encounter snow, Dexter Creek, for 1.5 miles and Bear Creek, to Grizzly Bear Mine. The Trail Group has completed work in the Amphitheater and moving on to several other trails in the next two weeks.

With unseasonably warm temperatures forecast for the next ten days, several other trails up to about 10,500 feet should begin to open up. Compliments of Kelvin Kent.

May 30: Adoptathon  Second Chance Humane Society is sniffing out good owners for homeless pets!  On May 30th from 9:00am to 3:00pm the Second Chance Humane Society is hosting its annual Adoptathon!  Come and meet some great dogs and cats.  You’ll also enjoy music performed by Tony Rosario and the Pour Boyz!  For more information please contact 626-2273.
